The government of Sudan depends on foreign investment to fund its genocidal campaign against the people of Darfur. Reports show that profits from Sudan's thriving oil industry have been used primarily to purchase or produce the military equipment Sudan uses against its own citizens.

Major financial institutions—perhaps ones that you trust to handle your investments—are invested in foreign oil companies that help provide the revenues that the government of Sudan uses to fund its campaign in Darfur.

Money talks. And experience shows that the government of Sudan responds to economic pressure. You don’t have to be an investor to urge these financial institutions to take responsibility for their actions. These companies want your business, and your voice matters.

I am writing as a concerned citizen to urge you to divest your firm's stocks from companies helping to finance the genocide in Darfur, Sudan.

The Sudanese government depends on foreign investment from oil companies such as PetroChina, Sinopec, ONGC and Petronas to finance its military and the brutal Janjaweed militias that are responsible for the unimaginable suffering of the people of Darfur. I encourage you to examine your stocks to identify and divest from these highly problematic companies that are helping to perpetuate the genocide by doing business with the government of Sudan.

After more than five years of violence, an estimated 450,000 civilian deaths and more than two million displaced, the crisis continues. The atrocities in Darfur demand that we do all we can to stop the suffering, including leveraging our investments to influence the actions of the government of Sudan.

Twenty-four states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. federal government have already adopted targeted Sudan divestment policies. I urge your firm to join this effort to cut off Khartoum's funding stream by using the guidelines of targeted divestment to divest from foreign companies that have a business relationship with the government of Sudan, impart minimal benefit to the country's underprivileged and have not responded to attempts at shareholder engagement.

If you fail to quickly take these steps, I will be forced to reconsider any current or future relationship with your firm. We must take action to stop the violence these investments are helping to perpetuate.
