A new year and a new chance for Darfur

On January 1, 2008, the United Nations officially took over the African Union peacekeeping force in Darfur. This new mission, called UNAMID, is charged with protecting civilians and ensuring the safe delivery of humanitarian aid. After five years of destruction and the failure of a previous attempt to deploy a U.N. peacekeeping force to Darfur, this is an important step toward ending the violence.

We can't let UNAMID fail.

Please call on President Bush today and urge him to help ensure that UNAMID receives the troops, equipment and support it needs to fulfill its mandate.

You have stated your commitment to ending the genocide in Darfur time and again. U.S. engagement has made a difference for the people of Darfur, but it has not been enough.

After five years of violence, displacement and destruction, an international peacekeeping force has finally come to Darfur. The joint United Nations-African Union mission, known as UNAMID, is tasked with providing protection to both Darfur's civilians and the aid workers trying to assist them. Without the necessary troop contributions and equipment, however, UNAMID may be doomed to failure.

The Government of Sudan has slowed UNAMID's progress by rejecting troop contributions and proposing restrictions on the mission's operations. Though such maneuvering was to be expected, it must be met with international condemnation.

Perhaps more troubling is the lack of important contributions of troops and vital equipment, such as helicopters, from countries that professed to support UNAMID's deployment.

I urge you to put ending the crisis in Darfur at the top of your agenda. Please use all diplomatic means at your disposal to press countries to contribute the troops, equipment and support necessary for UNAMID's effective operation. In addition, I urge you to help thwart the Government of Sudan's attempts at obstruction and, most important, push for a renewed and inclusive peace process.
